Andreas, I am loving your blog. It revives so many fantastic memories of our visits to Saint-Chinian and exploring the areas about. Really enjoyed your post on the mill on the hill above the village after having walked up there and through the hills and vineyards surrounding it countless times.
Also enjoyed seeing your war memorial photos in which I saw many familiar faces as people commemorated the war.
Hopefully it won’t be too long before we are back enjoying your weather, the sights and sites of the area, the fantastic local food, the great Saint-Chinian wines and especially the friendship and hospitality of everyone in the village.

Andreas, as usual I have enjoyed your blog and the memories it evokes.
It’s a lovely Glasgow summer’s day/evening (15 degrees) and a welcome relief from the 35 I endured in Munich last week when I was over there on business…no mention here of the discomfort of delayed flights from MUC to LHR and then LHR to GLA.
Tonight I am enjoying the news of the arrival of my second grand-daughter (due in November) and thought of you, all the village and surrounding wine makers, as I celebrate the news with a bottle of Saint-Chinian Salvanhiac (Special Reserve 2011) from the Cave, bought from our local supermarket.
It is very infrequently we see Saint-Chinian wines in Scotland, so I have enjoyed this. It is very ‘quaffable’ and takes me back to several festivals, on Sundays following July 14th, where I have met so many wonderful people, tasted so many good wines and eaten so much good food
that I have had to have a ‘wee lie down’ in the afternoon after celebrating with the locals and visitors in the square (it must have been the heat!)
From one of these occasions, I even have a photo of Miss France and myself in a ‘fond embrace’, taken under a plane tree in the square! This photo has helped me at many meetings as an ice-breaker introduction.
But further to the festivities in the square, the celebrations that we have had at the Cave with the winemakers, their families, the villagers and visitors maker the whole Saint-Chinian experience one not to be missed. I have so may great memories.
Before too long we will see you all again. Keith

Wonderful to hear from you and to know that you have all those fond memories of holidays spent in St Chinian!! I remember the time Miss France came to visit the Fete du Vin – I have a signed picture of her somewhere. If my memory serves me correctly, she was almost “local”, being from Pezenas :-).

My husband and I, along with his brother and sister-in-law, will be visiting the Languedoc next month, June 2014. We are avid cyclists. I know about the Midi Canal, and it has mixed reviews from cyclists. Are there other canals in the area that would be suitable for biking? We will be staying in Vacquieres.

Hi Denise, great to hear that you’re coming to visit the area! Cycling along the Canal du Midi is lovely, but you need good bikes as the towpath can be uneven in places, and not covered in tarmac. Another lovely ride is from Narbonne along the Canal de la Robine to the Ile Sainte Lucie, which is a nature reserve. And of course there are many nice rides in the Camargue!

Absolutely loved your blog and my husband and i were in that part of France at the same time, maybe we even crossed paths. We were already planning our next trip on the very long plane trip back to Australia. I for one did not want to go back to my own country i loved it so much. The kindness and patience of the local people we met was astounding and made my heart sing every day.
